Leverage the Big Data Advantage to Innovate Your Business!
Big Data is everywhere. Companies that unleash the power of this information will gain distinct competitive advantage. Companies that don't will be left behind. Today's traditional siloed infrastructure can't keep up with the growth of Big Data, resulting in higher costs and increasing complexity.
Introducing the HP ProLiant SL4500 server series, an HP-only innovation that's purpose-built for Big Data:
- Workload optimized - flexible configurations of compute and storage tuned and balanced to match Big Data application needs.
- Converged and balanced architecture - analytics that unite disk and solid state storage to accelerate performance.
- Enterprise reliability and serviceability - joins HP's award-winning Gen8 portfolio of the world's most intelligent servers.
This new category of server redefines the balance between performance and capacity resulting in savings of 51% less space, 61% less energy, 63% fewer cables and 75% less admin time.
With HP, customers can manage the complexity of Big Data and increase performance while saving millions of dollars.

Is the HP ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Server compatible with the SL6500 chassis or the c7000 blade chassis?
No, the SL4540 Gen8 is an entire system consisting of compute nodes in a chassis. The compute nodes are not swappable with those found in the HP ProLiant SL6500 Scalable System or any other enclosure that HP has to offer.
Are all of the hard drives (HDDs) in the HP ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Server hot plug?
Yes, all of the hard drives in the system are hot plug. The SL4540 Gen8 has two HDD sections. In the server node itself, there are two (2) 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) HDDs which are hot pluggable without removing the node or sliding the server out on rails. In the storage section, there are 60 3.5 inch large form factors (LFF) HDDs which are hot-pluggable after sliding the server forward on rails and removing the server lid.
Does the HP ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Server require any special options or accessories?
It is recommended that the end customer utilizes the HP 1200 mm deep racks for rear cable management. The SL4540 Gen8 supports the HP standard racks as well as third party solutions through rail kits and rail kit adaptors. Also, the SL4540 Gen8 can utilize the SL Advanced Power Manager console for power monitoring and management at the node level.
What advantages are there to utilizing the SL4540 Gen8?
There are several advantages. SL4540 Gen8 is a server purpose–built for big data. A highly efficient converged design that delivers the right combination capacity and performance in the least amount of space at lower cost with the reliability and manageability expected from HP ProLiant. The one node configuration can support up to sixty (60) 3.5 inch large form factor (LFF) HDDs for up to 240 TB of total storage. Next is simplicity. Typically, to get to sixty (60) 3.5 inch LFF HDD in a server, one would have to purchase multiple units, including JBODs, a server, and all the associated power and cabling to handle the multiple chassis. With the SL4540 Gen8, the only cables one has to manage are the networking cables and power cables, without the hassle of external SAS and additional power cables. Also, there are substantial savings in terms of rack space by using the SL4540 Gen8 as a scale out server solution.
Can I utilize the SL4540 Gen8 as a standard server?
Yes, the SL4540 Gen8 is designed to be a server with a large amount of internal storage. It is designed to help with the problems of data center growth associated with big data and the creation and handling of large data stores.
What is the size of the chassis in Rack U?
The SL4540 Gen8 server is 4.3U in height. To make this a 5U form factor, there is a spacer kit option. Another option is to use a 13U rack adaptor kit that allows three servers in 13U for maximum server density for up to 9 servers in a 42U rack.
Can I convert a 1 node configuration to a 2 node or a 3 node, or vice versa?
No. Chassis design for each configuration is specific.
When will the 1 node, 2 node and 3 node configurations become orderable and available?
The 1 node configuration is orderable and shipping as of today. 2 node configurations are orderable and shipping worldwide in December 2012. The 3 node configuration is expected to become available worldwide in the first quarter of 2013.
